Project — The Billboard Project

last updated: 09.04.06

Context

You are to produce a roadside billboard — a reduced, web-based facsimile thereof — one that offers a political, social, or corporate critique, that demonstrates the rhetorical device of irony, and that aims to persuade an audience. Your billboard should include some kind of visual/graphic plus some text.

Major Deliverables and Due Dates

TBA (see schedule)— Complete and polished DRAFT of billboard for editorial review (hint: you might want to test out multiple versions with your reviewers)

TBA (see schedule) — REVISED FINAL VERSION of billboard + project reflection

Evaluation Criteria for Project

In addition to the general criteria for all assignments related to PRODUCT, PROCESS, and PURPOSE (see WRA 202 course syllabus or WRA 361 course syllabus), the following criteria are especially important for this project:

PURPOSE
- Ironic power, subtlety, humor, persuasiveness—> Does the satire make your audience THINK? Is it likely to persuade them, to change their minds, or at least to unsettle them in a constructive way? ("Botany" pretty good in this regard, especially given location.)

PRODUCT
- Visual design —> Does the billboard LOOK like a professional design? ("Botany" not so good in this regard.)

PROCESS
- Collaboration, particularly contribution to the overall class effort, especially in these regards:
* collecting samples and adding them to the ANGEL course folder
* helping out with Photoshop learning (e.g., in class, or adding tutorials to ANGEL folder)
* peer review (providing useful/constructive suggestions; helping out with Photoshop features)
