The Summer Seminar in Rhetoric & Composition is sponsored by:

The College of Arts & Letters, The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, & American Cultures, and The Graduate Program in Rhetoric & Writing.

THE SUMMER SEMINAR

The purpose of the Summer Seminar in Rhetoric and Composition is to introduce college teachers to process model composition theories, pedagogies, and practices in ways that allow participants to apply these ideas at their home institutions. To this end, the program includes both formal presentations and practice sessions facilitated by prominent scholars who represent a variety of approaches and issues. The program's major goal is to create a forum that allows participants to come away with deep theoretical and rich experiential knowledge of the composing practices we address. To meet these goals we have established two major components to the Seminar:

  • A series of guest lectures which introduce participants to some of the major theoretical issues and pedagogical movements in contemporary composition studies
  • Practice session experiences which model different approaches to composition instruction.

Lecture and practice sessions will be presented and facilitated by prominent scholars in the field of Composition Studies. This structure gives participants opportunities to connect with practitioners who can advise them about effective strategies for implementation of the ideas we discuss at the Seminar. We believe it is important that participants understand themselves as people who are able to enter into the discussions and practices they experience at the Seminar and that they feel confident about their abilities to bring these discussions and practices back to their home institutions. For these reasons, the Seminar is limited to 50 participants.
