Contemporary Composition Pedagogy
AL891 section 301
This course is a survey of contemporary first-year composition pedagogies, focusing on the new trends in writing across the curriculum, cross-cultural issues, the integration of participatory technologies, and rhetorical listening.  Participants will attend the week-long seminar with daily presentations and workshops by major figures in the field:  Charles Bazerman, Krista Ratcliffe, Malea Powell, Beatrice Quarshie Smith, Danielle DeVoss, Bill Hart-Davidson and Jeff Grabill and a keynote address about the history of the field presented by Janice Lauer.   Attendance at all Seminar sessions is required for this course and carries a fee.  Students will define a major project in consultation with the Seminar Director, Dr. Nancy C. DeJoy, and will attend additional online hours with her as they complete those projects.

Registering as a Lifelong Education Status at Michigan State University as it Relates to Registrants for the
Summer Seminar in Rhetoric and Composition (SSRC)

  • Attendees planning to enroll for the SSRC workshop as Lifelong Education students should FIRST make sure their home institution will accept the credits upon completion of the workshop.
  • Attendees who want to enroll for the workshop as Lifelong Education students should complete the MSU Lifelong Education application available at: https://admissions.msu.edu/Apply.asp
  • IMPORTANT:  When prompted with the statement “I am a ___ student, it is very important that registrants select “LIFELONG” (even if they are currently a graduate student at their home institution.   Do NOT select “graduate” or the application will be processed as though they are trying to be admitted to an MSU graduate program.
  • Once the application is submitted, the applicant will receive a student number and MSU Net ID and password via email and U.S. mail in three to five business days.   
  • Once the registrant has a student number they will need to ENROLL for the summer semester 2008 course (AL 891) at http://webenroll.msu.edu/Start.asp
  • After completion of the SSRC workshop, registrants must request an MSU transcript ($5.00) http://www.reg.msu.edu/Transcripts/Transcript.asp and have the course accepted for transfer at their home institution.

NOTE:

  • Tuition for Lifelong Education enrollees is currently $378.75/credit hour.
  • The SSRC is 3 credits, so tuition will be a total of $1,136.25.
